What the Creating Futures Campaign Will Fund

The BlueSkies Master Facilities Plan—A Two-Phase Renovation Project

From our humble beginnings in a converted duplex, our facilities now sprawl over three properties, often referred to as “the BlueSkies maze.” The logistics of getting from here to there is challenging, and some areas are simply inaccessible to individuals with disabilities. Knowing that the environment is the “silent teacher,” we commissioned a Master Facilities Plan to ensure that our buildings welcome people of all physical abilities and create a physical environment that is optimal for learning.

    Phase 1—October 2005 - June 2006 (Completed)

      • Build a ground floor adult education classroom, an office for the Neighborhood Accreditation Center, and a resource library
      • Construct wheelchair accessible ramps leading to the new front entrance and expanded front office
      • Reorganize the entrance/exit to allow access to Children’s Program classrooms via dedicated paths

Phase 2—Summer - Fall 2007 (Currently in progress)

      • Remodel and expand three nursery school classrooms, and add new children’s bathrooms
      • Reconfigure play yard areas to maximize space, and build huge new covered porches for outdoor activities in all weather
      • Improve drainage and install new retaining walls, stairs, and ramps to increase safety and support accessibility features throughout the Children’s Program
      • Create non-obtrusive outdoor observation areas along the ramps and play yards for teacher training
      • Upgrade functionality of school kitchen

Total estimated cost for Phases 1 and 2 – $1.475 million

The Anne and Richard Copenhagen Endowment--Ensuring Socio-Economic Diversity

BlueSkies began over 20 years ago, as a program that served the children of very low-income, teenaged single parents. Since then, BlueSkies has continued using the exact same model program, serving hundreds of children from across the socio-economic spectrum.  Currently, annual fundraising supports tuition subsidies for about 20% of BlueSkies families.  Expanding the Anne and Richard Copenhagen Endowment for Scholarships is a long-term strategy to increase tuition assistance to more low-income families through the implementation of a full sliding scale tuition system, thus enabling BlueSkies to meet our priority of ensuring socio-economic diversity in the Children’s Program.

Campaign goal for the scholarship endowment - $225,000
